Video: A'ja Wilson Talks Accountability After Aces' Loss to Liberty in Finals Rematch

Julia StumbaughJun 15, 2024

Reigning Defensive Player of the Year A'ja Wilson says her love for her teammates is what has driven her to take accountability for the Las Vegas Aces' 6-6 start to the season.

"I love my teammates so much that I will take any hit for them," Wilson said in an emotional postgame press conference Saturday, following the Aces' 90-82 loss in a WNBA Finals rematch against the New York Liberty.

"Good, bad, ugly, I'm gonna go out there and I'm gonna try to be the best—I get y'all saying best player in the world, that's great, it looks great, but I wanna be the best person. I wanna be the best teammate. Because that's how I get the best out of my team."

Wilson tied her lowest single-game points total of the season as she recorded 21 points against the Liberty in Saturday's loss, which marked Las Vegas' fourth in five games.

The Aces, a team that lost just six times in 40 regular-season contests on their way to defeat the Liberty for the 2023 WNBA title, have now tied that loss total through just 12 games of the 2024 season.

"When it comes to wins, losses. When I tell you I break this game down piece by piece because, I don't wanna be great for you guys. No offense," Wilson laughed. "I wanna be great for my team. I wanna be great for my franchise.

"It is hard as s--t. It is hard as s--t, because there's tons of people that want to break you down, great teams in this league that are gonna try to come after you every single night. But when it comes to taking accountability, I have no problem with that. Because I want to be great. I want to be great for my teammates."

Wilson concluded: "It starts with me, and it's gonna always be with me, because I have 11 other women in that locker room that I need to pull greatness out of."

Wilson will look to lead the Aces, who currently hold a 3-4 home record, back to .500 in Vegas when the team returns to action Wednesday against the visiting Seattle Storm.
