Manchester United Transfer Rumors: Newcastle Loss Not Enough for Fergie to Panic

Josh MartinJan 5, 2012

The sky is falling, Mancunians!  Quickly, huddle indoors before the "noisy neighbors" steal all of Manchester United's thunder, leaving the English Premier League in ruins!

Grab that empty purse from the Glazers and spend like the dickens, Fergie!

Wait. Hold on a moment, please.

Yes, that means YOU, Chicken Little!

I know it looks bad.  I know that a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and Newcastle United is newsworthy only in the most unsettling of ways.

And I know the 3-2 hiccup against lowly Blackburn before that didn't exactly inspire confidence either.

But let's not panic just yet, shall we?

Let's allow Sir Alex Ferguson, who's been at the helm at Old Trafford for more than a quarter century now, to take care of his squad in steady fashion rather than throw money at Wesley Sneijder or Frank Lampard.

Remember, the Red Devils had won their previous five EPL matches following their 1-1 tie with the Toon in late November.

And let's also remember, Man U weren't the only big club in England to suffer through the holiday frenzy.  Chelsea and Arsenal both fell flat against Fulham, and Manchester City saw its supremacy sequestered by West Brom and Sunderland.

As a result, and after coming away with as many points as you and me combined against the Magpies and Rovers, the Reds sit but three points shy of City atop the EPL table.

Oh, and let's not forget, the back line, which has been leaky of late, will be bolstered by the returns of Jonny Evans and Fabio in the coming week, as will the attack when Ashley Young returns by mid-January.

And please, don't tell me United need more forwards.  Fergie already has Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and Dimitar Berbatov at his disposal.

If there's any area where Fergie could stand to spend a quid or two, it's in the midfield, where an injury to Tom Cleverley and the recurrence of Darren Fletcher's bowel condition have left United to shuffle and reshuffle their lineup.

Even so, Man U are still too good and too close to the apex of the league that they needn't poke and prod Fergie to spend and spend and spend some more.

So long as City are in poor form, which they figure to be so long as the Toure brothers are off at the Africa Cup of Nations and Mario Balotelli is in Roberto Mancini's doghouse, there will be no good reason to invite Chicken Little to Old Trafford anytime soon.
