Shocking Trade Ideas Eagles Should Pursue Before 2024 Season

Alex BallentineMay 22, 2024

The NFL's acquisition season is mostly over, but Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is one executive that is always looking to improve his roster.

Roseman has pulled off trades to acquire multiple players over the last few seasons. He has remained busy on the trade market targeting both veterans who could help right away like C.J. Gardner-Johnson or Kevin Byard and developmental dice rolls like Kenny Pickett and Albert Okwuegbunam.

Player movement this time of year is sparse, but there's the occasional trade that gets executed. Last year, the Browns traded for Za'Darius Smith in a move that helped form one of the league's best defenses.

With the Eagles looking to bounce back from last season's disappointing finish, here are three shocking trade ideas that should be on Philadelphia's radar.

Take a Shot on Treylon Burks

The Eagles got a bit of a surprise as OTA's started with DeVante Parker announcing that he's going to retire from the sport at 31 years old. Parker signed a one-year contract with the Eagles during free agency. Now the Eagles are down a pass-catcher.

Parker isn't a huge loss, but he was in line to carve out an actual role in the Eagles offense. The depth behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith has been a question. They lost Olamide Zacchaeus and Quez Watkins but signed Parker and Parris Campbell.

It leaves room for another receiver acquisition that might be able to contribute.

Roseman might want to go back to the Titans to add another struggling pass-catcher to the fold.

Treylon Burks has not lived up the hype as a former first-round pick in Music City. He followed up an underwhelming rookie season with an even less productive sophomore campaign in 2023. He had just 16 catches for 221 yards in nine games.

Burks is going to need a change of scenery if he's ever going to reach his potential. The Titans don't seem to have much planned for him after Tyler Boyd followed new head coach Brian Callahan from Cincinnati to Tennessee.

It probably wouldn't take much for the Eagles to bring Burks in. There's a chance he wouldn't be much help, but considering how little Zacchaeus and Watkins offered last season there's little downside to the move.

Part Ways with James Bradberry

Considering how well James Bradberry played in 2022, it's shocking that the Eagles might be better off without him in 2024.

Without a historic pass rush playing in front of him, Bradberry became an absolute liability in 2023. He gave up 11 touchdowns and a passer rating of 114.3 when targeted. On one hand, his play could improve with Vic Fangio taking over as defensive coordinator.

On the other, the Eagles have clearly prepared to move on from him, drafting Quinyon Mitchell in the first round and Cooper DeJean in the second.

Bradberry's contract is a tough financial pill to swallow. The only way they can create any cap space by getting rid of him is if they trade him after June 1. Even then, it would only be $1.2 million.

Still, trading him away should be under consideration. It's always hard to know how a veteran who has been a starter his whole career will respond to being replaced by a rookie and the Eagles might literally want the roster spot for someone they feel can be developed.

Bradberry's time as a functional starter for the Eagles is likely over. If there's a team willing to part with a pick to see if he can have a bounce back season with them, the Eagles should be all ears.

An NFC East Stunner for Jonathan Allen

Inter-division trades are somewhat rare, but they come together every now and then. Most of the time, it's a case where the deal just makes sense for both parties.

We all know how much value the Eagles place on the defensive line. They aren't likely to pass on any opportunity to make their pass rush elite. Adding a player like Jonathan Allen, who is a speculative trade chip the Commanders should look into playing, would certainly qualify.

Allen is a wrecking ball of a defensive tackle. According to Sports Info Solutions, Allen racked up 43 total pressures for the Commanders last season.

The tea leaves in D.C. don't necessarily bode well for Allen. They handed Daron Payne a four-year $90 million extension this offseason then used an early second-round pick on Illinois defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton.

With a new front office and coaching staff taking over, they might not be as willing to pay out the final two years of Allen's four-year, $72 million extension he signed two years ago. He carries cap hits of $21.4 and $23 million in those two years.

The Eagles have Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter, but Davis is a part-time player as a run-stuffing nose tackle. Philly's defense was at its most terrifying with Javon Hargrave and Fletcher Cox in the middle.

They could have a new version of the duo with Allen crossing the rivalry line.
