Seize The Grey held the lead on the inside coming out of the final turn at Pimlico Race Course.

Mystik Dan made a valiant sprint to try and catch Seize the Grey, but it came up just short and he was denied an opportunity to go after the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.

Preakness Stakes Results

1. Seize The Grey ($1.2 million purse)

2. Mystik Dan ($400,000)

3. Catching Freedom ($220,000)

4. Tuscan Gold ($120,000)

5. Just Steel ($60,000)

6. Uncle Heavy

7. Imagination

8. Mugatu

Seize The Grey's win gave Lukas his seventh Preakness win as a trainer, which is a new record for the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Lukas previously won the Preakness in 1980, 1985, 1994, 1995, 1999 and 2013. His last win at Pimlico came with Oxbow 11 years ago.

Lukas now has 15 career Triple Crown victories as a trainer. He has only won at the Preakness in the last 20 years. He won the Kentucky Derby four times between 1988 and 1999 and captured the Belmont Stakes in three straight years from 1994-96 and in 2000.

The run from Seize The Grey extended the Triple Crown drought to six years. Justify was the last horse to achieve the feat in 2018.

Mystik Dan put up a solid defense as the Derby winner, but he was unable to catch Seize The Grey on the final straight.

Mystik Dan came into Saturday as the Preakness favorite after Muth, the morning line favorite, scratched because of an illness earlier in the week.

Catching Freedom, who took fourth at the Derby, finished third behind Seize The Grey and Mystik Dan.

Lukas' other horse in the race, Just Steel, captured fifth place, while Tuscan Gold came in fourth six lengths behind the front three.
