Patriots' Rookies Who Will Make Instant Impact in 2024 Season

Joe TanseyMay 15, 2024

The New England Patriots' 2024 NFL draft class will be solely judged on the success of Drake Maye.

The Patriots' 2021 class, headlined by Mac Jones, is viewed more negatively because the franchise failed to nail down a long-term answer at quarterback.

New England still got Christian Barmore and Rhamondre Stevenson out of that draft, but there was one big failure in the first round.

The Patriots hope the 2024 draft class turns out better with a star quarterback and a solid supporting class, led by second-round pick Ja'Lynn Polk.

Maye and Polk should make immediate impacts on the Patriots offense. Any other production from draft picks would be a welcome surprise.

Maye is the quarterback of the present and future in New England.

The No. 3 overall pick comes into 2024 with high expectations to, at bare minimum, stabilize the Patriots offense.

New England got one good year out of Jones and then went through long stretches where it was debated whether he or Bailey Zappe should be the option under center.

Maye does not have to lead the Patriots to the playoffs to be a success in his rookie season.

New England is in a full rebuild and it may take a few years to get back to contending for a wild-card spot.

However, Maye is expected to make the Patriots more competitive and win a handful of games, especially at the back end of the season when he has a total grip on the offense.

A six-or-seven-win campaign with some in-season improvement would be the ideal success story for Maye in his situation.

Ja'Lynn Polk

The Patriots have to figure out their crowded wide receiver depth chart.

Polk is near the top of that list because of his stature as a second-round pick and the 1,159-yard season he put together last season at Washington.

Polk recorded 110 receptions over the last two seasons, so he is used to being a high-volume target inside his offense.

Demario Douglas probably has the inside track to the No. 1 wide receiver spot inside a room with Kendrick Bourne, JuJu Smith-Schuster, K.J. Osborn and Tyquan Thornton.

Ideally, the Patriots would trot out Douglas and Polk as their top pass-catchers to work with Maye to have a strong foundation in place for the future.

A strong first few weeks from Polk would cement his status alongside Douglas and potentially might allow the Patriots to cut one or two of their veteran wide outs.

Javon Baker

Javon Baker has a better chance of seeing the field at wide receiver than some of his fellow mid-to-late-round picks do of playing on the offensive line.

The fourth-round pick out of UCF turned in a 1,139-yard season in his only year with the Knights. He transferred to the Big 12 school from Alabama.

The Patriots may be willing to give their young pass-catchers more opportunities than Bourne, Osborn or Smith-Schuster because they would help build the team's offensive foundation for years to come.

If Baker turns in a solid training camp, he could get on the field in significant situations in September.

He does not carry the same expectations as Polk, but if makes a similar impact on the offense, the Patriots will be a good spot moving forward.
