Steve Kerr: Kevin Durant 'Looked Good' at Team USA Practice amid Calf Injury Recovery
Kevin Durant took a step toward returning to the court for the 2024 Olympics on Wednesday.
Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today noted the Phoenix Suns star, who is working his way back from a calf injury, went through a non-contact practice even though it remains to be seen whether he will play in Sunday's opener against Serbia.
"We will do some live stuff (Thursday), so the plan is for him to get in the scrimmage and see how he handles that," head coach Steve Kerr said. "But yeah, he looked good (Wednesday), and he did everything and got a lot of shots up and told me he's feeling pretty good."
Kerr also explained that Team USA's managing director Grant Hill is communicating with trainers, Durant's team and the Suns in a collaborative effort.
"This is not going to be like us going out and saying, 'Hey, let's just throw him out there,'" Kerr said. "This will be a big collaboration."
Rich Kleiman, Durant's agent, told Brian Windhorst of ESPN that his client is "working tirelessly" to return to Team USA and that he could have played during the warm-up games in London.
This comes after Durant just had his healthiest season since suffering a torn Achilles in 2019. He appeared in 75 games for Phoenix and averaged 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game last season while shooting 41.3 percent from three-point range.
The Suns were unable to capitalize on Durant's brilliance, as they were swept in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Durant, Bradley Beal and Devin Booker spent most of the season struggling to figure out how to play with one another, particularly in the fourth quarter.
Attention now turns to the Olympics, but Durant did not play in any of the five exhibition contests ahead of the Games.
The Americans still won all five, although they were tested in a one-point win over South Sudan, four-point win over Germany and six-point win over Australia.
They will likely have an easier time putting opponents away when Durant returns given his status as an all-time great and the leading men's Olympics scorer in Team USA history.
