Patriots' Drake Maye Says 'Goal' Is to Start Week 1, 'Ready to Learn' from Brissett

Andrew PetersApr 29, 2024

After he was drafted No. 3 overall by the New England Patriots, quarterback Drake Maye is gearing up to begin his NFL career.

Being taken so early, it can be assumed Maye will be the starter this season, and he said that's the goal, but if he doesn't get the nod, he's ready to learn from Jacoby Brissett.

"I think [starting] is obviously the goal for myself and any quarterback coming into the NFL," Maye said on Audacy's WEEI 93.7 Jones and Mego (3:32). "But also I just think I want to get in there and learn. Learn from Jacoby [Brissett], learn from the older guys around there and put my best foot forward."

He said that until the season starts, his goal is to earn the respect of his teammates while also learning from the veterans around him.

"I think for me, just want to earn the respect from the guys and get to know them first," Maye said. "But obviously, all that stuff on the field will come after that. So I look forward to helping the Patriots in any way. Obviously, it's the goal, but I'm ready for anything that happens. I think one of the best things about being a 21-year-old coming in there is, get ready to learn and soak it all in and if I'm the best guy, I think Coach Mayo's kind of said that the best guys going to play. If it's me, I'm ready to go, if not I'm going to prepare like it and compete and learn as much as I can from the other guys to get ready to do that."

Maye had an outstanding final season at North Carolina and appears ready to get to work in the NFL. Last season, he had 3,608 passing yards and 24 touchdowns for the Tar Heels and he was the No. 3 overall player on Bleacher Report's Big Board.

Maye has high expectations, just as any quarterback drafted No. 3 overall would, but he's ready to meet and exceed those expectations in his first year with New England.
