This change was several months in the making, with the white '80s-inspired look making its debut last season as a throwback. Minus a few aesthetic tweaks, those throwbacks will now serve as the primary whites moving forward.
"We work for the fans," said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson. "They have consistently asked for us to return to our roots and we heard them. The new uniforms are explicitly designed to look and feel like the New York Jets while refreshing the club's iconic logo—viewed by fans as our most identifiable mark."
The early/mid 1980s were an era of prosperity for the Jets, with the team making four playoff appearances from 1981 to 1986. Defensive linemen Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko, Marty Lyons and Abdul Salaam shot to fame in that era as the New York Sack Exchange, helping inspire the NFL to begin counting the sack as an official statistic.
The new uniforms stick to the general theme of their Sack Exchange counterparts but with a modern twist. The team is sticking to its shell green color of recent seasons rather than adjusting the shade to match the 1980s uniforms, and the Jets also introduced a sleek modern black look.
The black uniform comes with an alternate black helmet, an understandable switch to keep things on theme. The NFL allowed teams to go through a uniform redesign to allow up to three helmets this season, a change that will go into place for all teams beginning in 2025, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
