Denver Sets NCAA Hockey Record with 10th National Title; Hyped By Fans for Win vs. BC
The University of Denver hockey team made history with a Saturday night shutout.
Denver won 2-0 over Boston College in the Men's Hockey National Championship to claim a record 10th NCAA title.
The Pioneers were previously tied with Michigan for the college men's hockey record with nine championships.
Goaltender Matt Davis, who had allowed four goals in his previous four starts for Denver, made 34 saves to earn the blank slate.
Boston College earned several high-danger chances early in the game, but it was Denver first on the board.
Sophomore forward Jared Wright opened scoring halfway through the second period with a shot that ricocheted off the post and in.
Denver then controlled play until sophomore forward Rieger Lorenz, who assisted on the first goal, provided an insurance tally five and a half minutes later.
Lorenz scored on a highlight-reel pass from freshman Zeev Buium.
Boston College forward Ryan Leonard, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals with the No. 8 pick of the 2023 draft, led Boston College with eight shots in the loss.
Saturday night's NCAA title game featured a bevy of players who could be joining the NHL in the future. Boston College's roster features 14 NHL draft picks, while 12 took the ice for Denver.
It's possible Smith, a free agent, could have earned himself his own look from NHL scouts with his championship shutout.
