Justin Fields' Top NFL Landing Spots After Steelers' Kenny Pickett Traded to Eagles
The Kenny Pickett era is officially over in Pittsburgh after the Steelers traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles for a pick swap, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
With Russell Wilson in town on a one-year deal, the Steelers already have their QB1 for 2024. But the Steelers don't have a backup or a long-term solution at the position.
That begs the question of whether the Steelers could be in the mix for Justin Fields, whose days in Chicago appear numbered based on the host of rumors that have the team selecting USC's Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick.
However, Fields could certainly have interest elsewhere. The issue is those spots are drying up with teams making moves at QB. For example, the oft-discussed Atlanta Falcons, a potential Fields landing spot, are now out after signing Kirk Cousins.
Ultimately, Fields is probably headed somewhere. Here's a look at three potential spots.
New York Jets
1 of 3
It's possible that Aaron Rodgers will never play for the Jets again. He and former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura are on top of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s list to be his running mate.
If that's the case, then it's impossible seeing how he can feasibly be the quarterback of the Jets and run for office.
As it stands now, the Jets don't have a long-term solution at quarterback as is. Rodgers is 40 years old and coming off a torn Achilles, and it's possible that he'll never be the same quarterback again. New York added veteran Tyrod Taylor via free agency as insurance, but with the Zach Wilson era now over, the Jets need to find someone new.
Fields is out there, and the Jets have to consider him. He would bring an energetic and dynamic presence at quarterback that the team has frankly never seen before. Most importantly, though, he's a former Ohio State teammate of Jets superstar wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and re-establishing that rapport could be a big win for the Jets.
Denver Broncos
2 of 3
The Broncos are in the midst of a full-on rebuild, parting ways with old franchise cornerstones such as Wilson, safety Justin Simmons and wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.
Now they need a quarterback most importantly. Denver turned to Jarrett Stidham, a five-year veteran who has operated as a backup, to take over for a benched Wilson at the end of the 2023 season.
He did well in two games (496 passing yards, 60.6 percent completion rate, 2:1 TD-INT ratio), but the Broncos need to bring talent in and figure out a long-term solution.
The Broncos aren't likely to get a blue-chip draft prospect sitting at No. 12. They can trade up, but a host of teams in front of them need signal-callers. Perhaps the Broncos are best suited then to trade for Fields, use the No. 12 choice on another position (or trade down for more capital) and go from there.
Denver hasn't been able to find much success at quarterback since Peyton Manning left town nearly one decade ago. Fields has flashed great potential at times and led the Bears to much success in the back half of the year. Perhaps he's the solution in Denver.
Pittsburgh Steelers
3 of 3
The Steelers need a long-term solution at quarterback. Perhaps that's Wilson, but he's on a one-year deal. At 35 years old, he's also on the back end of his career.
Numerous analysts suggested that the Steelers now trade for Fields, have him sit behind Wilson for a year and potentially take over in 2025.
Frankly, it makes too much sense to not happen. The Steelers haven't gotten good quarterback play since the end of the Ben Roethlisberger era. While Fields has his flaws, he's an electric talent who can raise this offense to another level.
The fact of the matter is that the Steelers need to take advantage of the talent that's on the roster. Their personnel department always reload this team year after year and puts the squad in position to compete. A good quarterback may not put the Steelers up there with the NFL's elite in the Kansas City Chiefs, but they wouldn't be fighting to just hopefully stay over .500 with one either.
They routinely have one of the NFL's best defenses and sport some high-potential skill players such as George Pickens and Jaylen Warren. Adding a player like Fields could be a huge boost to this franchise.
