NFL Rumors: Raiders' Jimmy Garoppolo to Be Cut, 'a Few Teams Interested' in Contract

Tyler ConwayMar 12, 2024

The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to release quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo at the start of the 2024 NFL league year Wednesday.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that "a few" teams are interested in signing Garoppolo when he hits the open market. The Raiders can save $24.1 million on their 2024 cap by designating Garoppolo as a post-June 1 release, per Over the Cap.

Regardless, the team will save the $11.3 million in guaranteed money Garoppolo was due after the veteran quarterback received a two-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.

Garoppolo started just seven games last season before being benched in favor of Aiden O'Connell. He threw for 1,205 yards and seven touchdowns against nine interceptions, failing to live up to his three-year, $72.8 million contract. The Raiders also fired coach Josh McDaniels midseason, and Garoppolo's failure to live up to his contract likely played a part in that decision.

It would be a surprise if any team signed Garoppolo as anything besides a high-level backup. Teams considering drafting young quarterbacks could bring in Garoppolo as a veteran mentor, though many of those jobs have already been scooped up.

The Washington Commanders (Marcus Mariota), New England Patriots (Jacoby Brissett), New York Giants (Drew Lock) and Minnesota Vikings (Sam Darnold) have all agreed to terms with veteran quarterbacks in free agency.

The Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos are among the teams that could still use a veteran quarterback.
