Justin Jefferson's Fantasy Outlook with Sam Darnold After Kirk Cousins to Falcons

Adam WellsMar 12, 2024

As the Minnesota Vikings transition from the Kirk Cousins era, Justin Jefferson's fantasy outlook in 2024 is going to be different with a new quarterback coming in.

Sam Darnold will be given the first crack at winning the job after agreeing to a one-year, $10 million deal with the Vikings, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

Minnesota struck a deal with Darnold after Cousins agreed to a four-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, per Cousins' agent.

Since being drafted by the Vikings in 2020, Jefferson has recorded 354 receptions for 5,338 yards and 29 touchdowns in 54 games started by Cousins.

That would be the fifth-most receiving yards and tied for 12th-most receiving touchdowns in the NFL.

In six games he's played without Cousins, Jefferson has 38 receptions for 561 yards and two touchdowns. It's a much smaller sample size, but there are reasons to be optimistic from a fantasy perspective.

On a per-game basis, Jefferson's receptions are virtually identical with Cousins (6.6) as they are without (6.3). His receiving yards are slightly down without Cousins (93.5) compared to with him (98.9).

The most concerning part of Jefferson's output is touchdowns. He averaged more than one touchdown every other game with Cousins as opposed to one every three games with someone else.

Again, since the sample size is so small, it's unfair to draw any major conclusions. But there is a natural regression that comes for any offense when they downgrade at quarterback.

Darnold will get his first chance to be a regular starter since the 2022 season with the Carolina Panthers. The former No. 3 overall pick had arguably the best stretch of his career over his first five starts with Carolina. He threw for 1,100 yards with seven touchdowns, one interception and a 61.6 completion percentage from Weeks 12-17.

Things regressed badly for Darnold in the final game of that season. He finished 5-of-15 for 43 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in a 10-7 win over the New Orleans Saints.

The Panthers didn't have an infrastructure as good as Minnesota currently does, but it wasn't as bad as you might think based on what Carolina looked like in 2023. The 2022 team had the 11th-best offensive line by pass-block win rate.

D.J. Moore isn't as good as Jefferson, but he's a very talented wideout who put up 273 yards and three touchdowns over a three-game stretch with Darnold from Weeks 14-16.

The Vikings had the third-best offensive line in the NFL last season by pass-block win rate. Jefferson and Jordan Addison are the best receiver duo that Darnold has ever played with in the NFL.

Even though there's still a possibility the Vikings try to add a quarterback in the draft, if they end up rolling with Darnold in 2024, this offense should be able to operate at a level similar to what they were at with Cousins.

Jefferson's fantasy value isn't going to change appreciably. He's one of the rare wide receivers who seems to be quarterback-proof. Fantasy managers should have no concerns about selecting him in the first round when drafts begin this summer.
