Kirk Cousins Rumors: Broncos Won't Pursue Vikings QB in FA After Russell Wilson Exit

zach bacharMar 10, 2024

The Denver Broncos are not expected to pursue Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins if he hits free agency, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Russini noted that the Broncos had "some conversations" about making a run at Cousins, but they have reportedly decided against it. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero previously listed Denver as a team that is expected to pursue the 35-year-old, although that no longer appears to be the case after some internal discussions.

The Broncos will likely still be on the lookout for a new quarterback after they released Russell Wilson on March 4. Denver took on $85 million in dead cap by cutting ties with Wilson, representing the largest dead cap hit in NFL history.

With the team releasing Wilson after just two seasons, it's easy to see why the front office may be hesitant to hand out a long-term contract to another veteran quarterback. The Broncos could focus on selecting a signal-caller who will be on a rookie deal instead, as they currently own the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 draft.

Although Denver may no longer be interested in his services, Cousins should have no problem with receiving contract offers in free agency. Pelissero mentioned the Atlanta Falcons as another team that may attempt to sign him, while the Vikings are also focused on keeping him in Minnesota.

It's not hard to see why, as Cousins was off to a strong start in 2023 before a torn Achilles in Week 8 ended his season. In his first eight starts, he completed 69.5 percent of his passes for 2,331 yards and 18 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions.

With Denver out, it appears to be a two-team race between Minnesota and Atlanta to sign the veteran quarterback.
