Gleyber Torres on Upcoming MLB Contract Talks: 'I Want to Be a Yankee for Life'
Heading into his final season of arbitration before being eligible for free agency, Gleyber Torres is hoping to remain with the New York Yankees.
Speaking to reporters from the team's spring training home in Florida, Torres said his goal is to spend his entire career with the Bronx Bombers.
"I always say, I feel (at) home right now," Torres said. "I know this organization since 2016. I feel good. I know everybody. As a player, you never want to leave your house. I'm in a good spot. I want to be a Yankee for life. That's one of my goals. Let's see what happens."
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has seemingly made it clear he's not anticipating any contract talks with Torres' camp until after this season.
"He's our second baseman for this year," Cashman told reporters early in spring training. "Haven't had any conversations about anything past that."
Torres was able to avoid arbitration when he agreed to a one-year, $14.2 million deal with the Yankees in January. He could be one of the most sought-after players in free agency next offseason.
A two-time All-Star, Torres will hit the market going into his age-28 season. The list of position players set to become free agents after the 2024 campaign includes Alex Bregman, Pete Alonso and Juan Soto.
The Yankees' acquisition of Soto might actually hurt Torres' chances of staying in New York. Soto is both younger and a better player, so he will likely be their top priority in contract talks after the season.
Torres did have arguably his best season in 2023. He hit .273/.347/.453 with 25 homers, 68 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 158 games.
New York originally acquired Torres in July 2016 from the Chicago Cubs as part of the Aroldis Chapman trade. He made his debut the following year and finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting, behind Shohei Ohtani and Miguel Andújar.
