Chiefs' Andy Reid No. 1 HC in NFLPA Player Survey; Ex-Raiders HC Josh McDaniels Last

Tyler ConwayFeb 28, 2024

If Andy Reid's back-to-back Super Bowls weren't enough to make people believe he's the best coach in the NFL, he's also got the backing of the players—and not just his own.

Reid was voted as the top NFL head coach in a survey of 1,706 players released by the NFLPA on Wednesday. He was one of three coaches to receive an A+ grade, with Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell and Detroit Lions coach Dan Cambell being the others.

Former Las Vegas Raiders coach Josh McDaniels received an NFL-worst D grade.

If you believe the player report card, Reid's brilliance is only made more impressive by the fact the Chiefs have one of the NFL's worst infrastructures around him. Kansas City ranked as one of the NFL's five worst teams in dietician/nutritionist, locker room, training room, training staff and ownership.

Owner Clark Hunt was given an F- grade and is viewed as the league's worst owner by players over his refusal to invest in facilities.

"The players' issue with quality of care is mostly centered around the training room. The players feel that the training room is significantly understaffed, with only 43% of the team responding that they get an adequate amount of one-on-one treatment time," the NFLPA wrote. "Players feel that the staff is unwilling to provide the necessary treatment to support recovery and performance; for example, players are not allowed to get preventative treatment (soft tissue work, other care) for soreness and day-to-day issues, a regular offering across the NFL.

"From the results, it is clear that there has not been a significant reinvestment back into the facilities even after consistent success. That has led to a high level of frustration among player respondents and reflects in club owner Clark Hunt's ranking as the least willing to invest in team facilities among all NFL owners/ownership group in the opinions of the respondents."

Reid has led the Chiefs to four Super Bowl appearances and three championships in the last five years despite a disappointing lack of support. It's hard to find much of an excuse for Hunt not re-investing in his team given its success and the presence of a superstar quarterback in Patrick Mahomes.

Meanwhile, it appears McDaniels squandered an opportunity with one of the NFL's best jobs. The Raiders ranked among the NFL's five best teams in food/cafeteria, dietician/nutritionist, locker room, training room and weight room.

We'll have to see if new coach Antonio Pierce can take advantage of those amenities and build a consistent winner.
