NFL Rumors: Drake Maye Plans to Only Do 'Physicals and Interviews' at 2024 Combine

Tyler ConwayFeb 27, 2024

Drake Maye will reportedly not throw at the 2024 NFL scouting combine.

Josina Anderson of CBS Sports and NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the North Carolina product plans to only do interviews and physicals with teams in Indianapolis. Fellow top quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Jaylen Daniels are also expected to skip out on the throwing and testing portions of the combine.

Marvin Harrison Jr., the draft's best non-quarterback, is not planning on attending the combine at all. Despite the NFL's best efforts to turn the combine into a marquee event, elite players seemingly know there will be little recourse to skipping out.

Particularly for quarterbacks, the logic in skipping workouts is sound. Pro days will give quarterbacks a chance to throw at facilities and to receivers they're familiar with. The combine is a more random assortment, which creates a higher likelihood of performance variance.

Williams, Maye and Daniels are all top-10 locks and could be the first three players taken in April. Williams is the overwhelming favorite to go No. 1 overall, so Maye and Daniels would be potentially jockeying for just one spot between them.

Maye saw his numbers take a noteworthy step back from 2022 but still threw for 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns against nine interceptions while adding 449 yards and nine scores on the ground last season.

B/R's Scouting Department rates him as the top quarterback in the 2024 class, one spot ahead of Williams, at No. 3 overall.
