Giants' Schoen: 'I Have Faith in' Daniel Jones as Starting QB amid NFL Draft Rumors

Adam WellsFeb 27, 2024

Amid rumors that the New York Giants might look to trade up for a quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft, general manager Joe Schoen isn't closing the door on Daniel Jones being a viable starting option.

"I have faith in Daniel as our starting quarterback," Schoen told reporters on Tuesday.

The Giants are slated to pick sixth in the draft, which almost certainly puts them out of the running for one of the top three quarterbacks if they stand pat.

ESPN's Jordan Raanan reported on Monday the team would be "seriously willing to look at the quarterback position" if the right "situation presents itself."

While that is incredibly vague, this week will be the first opportunity when the right situation could present itself to the Giants. Schoen is part of the organization's contingent in Indianapolis for the scouting combine.

The top three quarterback prospects—Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels—are expected to be at the event. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Williams and Daniels will take part in meetings and interviews, but neither plans to take part in the throwing drills.

Maye's status for the throwing drills hasn't been determined yet. J.J. McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix are among the notable quarterbacks who plan to participate in the throwing drills.

Even if the Giants decide to add a quarterback with their first-round pick, it's unlikely they will move on from Jones this offseason. His trade value is going to be low coming off a season in which he performed poorly before suffering a torn ACL in a Nov. 5 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jones' contract makes it difficult for the Giants to release him. The best they can do is designate him as a post-June 1 cut, which would give them no financial savings and a $47.1 million dead-cap charge for next season.

New York signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million deal last offseason after he led the team to the postseason in 2022. He threw for 909 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions in six starts before blowing out his knee last season.
