Drake Maye Discusses Training With Philip Rivers Ahead of 2024 NFL Draft

Drake Maye is seeking out some Hall of Fame advice as he prepares for the 2024 NFL draft.

The North Carolina product revealed he's spent time working out with former Chargers and Colts quarterback Philip Rivers to improve his game for the NFL.

"He's one of the best, he reminds me just of my brothers. Loves to compete," Maye told ESPN's Adam Schefter. "He's out there, we're throwing six step outs, a 10-yard drill throwing into the net. Shoot, he retired two or three years ago, but he still won the competition. So he's just a competitor. Not only that, he's just one of the guys. Gets along with people so well and knows the game.

He was in the digit system with San Diego, so just picking his brain on that. I know there's a little bit of systems in the NFL. So just trying to have fun, ask him what he likes. I think the biggest thing about Phil is he stayed healthy for so long in his career. Such a long career, and I think he played 17 games for, like for some crazy stat, 15 straight years or something. So I just pick his brain on how he stayed healthy. He's a big dude like me, so just trying to kind of find ways to relate to him."

Rivers did not miss a regular-season game his entire 15-year run as a starter in the NFL. He finished his career with 63,440 passing yards and 421 touchdowns against 209 interceptions, making eight Pro Bowls. The 42-year-old ranks sixth all time in both passing yards and passing touchdowns.

If Maye is able to have even a modicum of Rivers' success at the NFL level, his career will be an unqualified success. The North Carolina product is expected to be the second or third quarterback taken in April's draft, with USC's Caleb Williams considered a near-lock for the No. 1 pick.

B/R's Scouting Department actually ranks Maye ahead of Williams and as the third-best player in this class overall.
