Purdue's Zach Edey Says 'Nothing Wrong' With CBB Court Storming If Done Safely
Purdue center Zach Edey doesn't have an issue with fans storming the court to celebrate after a win, as long as it's done safely.
"Students, probably a lot of drunk students, charging the court against another team isn't the safe thing to do, but I think it's a part of the game," Edey said last week, per ESPN's William Weinbaum and Sara Coello. "I think it's a reason for fans to go to games. I think there's nothing wrong with it, as long as you do it safely."
The topic of fans rushing onto the floor became a widely-discussed topic after Duke sophomore center Kyle Filipowski sustained a knee injury after he collided with a supporter that ran on the court following the Blue Devils' loss to Wake Forest on Saturday.
Later, Filipowski appeared to call for a rule against storming the floor in a post on X.
Duke head coach Jon Scheyer called for the banishment of fans rushing onto the floor after the game, referring to it as a "dangerous thing."
"How many times does a player have to get into something, where they get punched, or they get pushed, or they get taunted right in their face?" Scheyer asked, via Weinbaum and Coello.
As Edey himself has been able to avoid any issues with fans storming the court, the 2022-23 Big Ten Player of the Year seems to be in favor of allowing it to continue. The 7'4" center has put together another strong campaign for the Boilermakers this season, averaging 23.3 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game on 61.9 percent shooting.
