JJ Redick: 'Don't Regret What I Said' About Doc Rivers in Viral Video

JJ Redick isn't backtracking on his comments.

The former NBA guard and current ESPN analyst addressed his viral comments regarding Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers in an episode of his The Old Man and The Three podcast on Thursday.

"Don't regret what I said," Redick said. "It's truthful to me. I do regret the delivery. I think sometimes when you get in certain environments, you can get emotional and I regret that."

On Tuesday, he ripped his former head coach for "always making excuses" during an appearance on First Take and called out Rivers for failing to take accountability when his teams have been through adversity.

"I've seen the trend for years," Redick said. "The trend is always making excuses. Doc, we get it. Taking over a team in the middle of the season is hard. Just like getting traded in the middle of the season is hard for a player. We get it. But it's always an excuse. It's always throwing your team under the bus."

This prompted a response from defensive-minded guard Patrick Beverley, who currently plays for Rivers in Milwaukee. In a post on X, Beverley claimed that the head coach "saved" Redick's career by giving him a starting job on the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2013-24 season. This led to a back-and-forth on social media between the two.

Although his comments caused a stir, it's clear that Redick stands behind everything he said regarding his former coach's perceived lack of accountability despite wishing that his delivery of the message was a bit more subdued.

On Feb. 17, Rivers told Fox Sports' Yaron Weitzman that he was confused by the Bucks' decision to hire him before a difficult road stretch looming.

"Taking a job when you're about to go on the toughest road trip of the season is not the smartest decision," he said. "I even told them that: 'Can we wait 'til All-Star break?' You know, it would have been a lot nicer."

However, the Bucks hired him on Jan. 26 and have gone 3-7 since he started coaching.
