Anyone who saw the aftermath of Monday's men's basketball game between Texas A&M-Commerce and Incarnate Word knew suspensions were coming, and they arrived Wednesday.
Myron Medcalf of ESPN reported the Southland Conference suspended eight players in total (four from each team) for their roles in the fight that broke out during the postgame handshake line following Texas A&M-Commerce's 76-72 overtime victory.

The suspensions were for "flagrant unsportsmanlike actions" and will start immediately. Here is a look at the punishments:
- Texas A&M-Commerce's Jerome Brewer Jr. (three games)
- Texas A&M-Commerce's Ant Abraham (three games)
- Texas A&M-Commerce's Kwo Agwa (three games)
- Texas A&M-Commerce's Prince Davies (one game)
- Incarnate Word's Elijah Davis (three games)
- Incarnate Word's Alex Anderson (two games)
- Incarnate Word's Gabe Beny Til (two games)
- Incarnate Word's Marcus Glover (two games)
It was a shocking scene, as chaos broke out during the handshakes. Players, coaches and managers were all involved during a fight that lasted for more than a minute.
Southland commissioner Chris Grant released a statement:
"The Southland Conference Board of Directors has set clear expectations for sportsmanship and behavior of our student-athletes, coaches, and spectators during and after competitions. Unfortunately, these expectations were not met on Monday night, and the Southland Conference will not tolerate any unsportsmanlike behavior. I would like to extend our appreciation to A&M-Commerce Athletics Director Jim Curry and [Incarnate Word] Athletics Director Richard Duran for their unwavering partnership and diligent resolution of this matter."
Medcalf noted the two teams also released a joint statement that said there is "no place in college sports" for such actions.
The fight overshadowed what was an excellent game.
Kalen Williams' three-pointer in the final 20 seconds of overtime broke a tie and gave Texas A&M-Commerce the lead for good. Alonzo Dodd led the way in the win with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block.
While neither of those players was suspended for the Lions, they, along with Incarnate Word, will be quite shorthanded in the immediate future as a result of the brawl.
Next up for Texas A&M-Commerce is a road game against Nicholls on Saturday, while Incarnate Word travels to McNeese on the same day.
