Report: Prime Video Paying NFL Record $120M to Broadcast 2025 NFL Playoff Game

Adam WellsFeb 21, 2024

While it had been previously reported Prime Video landed broadcast rights to one NFL playoff game next season, it wasn't known until now how much the streaming giant was paying the league.

Per Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports, the NFL is receiving an estimated $120 million from Prime Video for the exclusive rights to one postseason game.

The figure surpasses the $110 million NBCUniversal paid for exclusive rights to broadcast a wild-card game on the Peacock streaming service this season.

Joe Flint of the Wall Street Journal reported on Feb. 9 that Prime Video reached a deal with the NFL for a playoff game after the 2024 regular season.

The Peacock deal was only for one season, with Flint noting NBCUniversal sought to keep the streaming-only game but Amazon's deal with the NFL contains a clause that allowed it to claim the contest.

NBCUniversal's deal with the NFL seems to have paid off, despite the massive price tag. The company said it was "the biggest live streamed event in U.S. history" with an average audience of 23 million viewers for the Miami Dolphins-Kansas City Chiefs game on Jan. 13.

Research firm Antenna estimated Peacock got 2.8 million sign-ups over wild-card weekend, making it the "single biggest subscriber acquisition event" tracked by the company.

Prime Video became the first streaming service to land an exclusive national broadcast deal with the NFL. The two sides finalized a 10-year agreement in 2021 that made the streamer the exclusive home for Thursday Night Football starting with the 2023 season.

CNBC's Alex Sherman and Jabari Young reported Amazon is paying the NFL around $1 billion per year as part of the deal. The league added a Black Friday game to its Prime Video package last season.

McCarthy noted the Black Friday game between the Dolphins and New York Jets only drew 9.6 million viewers on Prime Video, compared to the 34.1 million viewers the three Thanksgiving Day games averaged.

It should be noted while the Dolphins were a playoff contender all season, the Jets were 5-8 and had been held to 13 points or fewer in six of their past seven games going into the Black Friday matchup.

The Black Friday game also didn't have the advantage of Taylor Swift sitting in the stands like the Dolphins-Chiefs playoff matchup did.
