Nets GM Sean Marks: 'No Reason' to Think I Won't Be Around to Hire New HC amid Rumors
Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks is no stranger to the process of hiring a new head coach after firing one, and he believes he will have the chance to go through it again after the team fired Jacque Vaughn on Monday.
Marks told reporters Nets governor Joe Tsai has "given me no reason to believe that I won't be able to make that decision."
The general manager's status with the team was a major topic of discussion after the firing of Vaughn, especially when Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported "there is mounting speculation among league personnel about whether Marks could follow suit out the door."
However, Fischer also noted "among NBA figures with knowledge of the situation, there's been little doubt, sources said, of Marks' ongoing strong standing with Nets governors Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai."
That echoes the general manager's latest comments and suggests he will, in fact, be the one to decide on the next head coach.
Marks has hired and fired three head coaches during his eight years running the show in Brooklyn in Kenny Atkinson, Steve Nash and Vaughn. The Nets have won just one playoff series in that stretch and were best known for failing to live up to elevated expectations when they grouped Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving together.
That trio rarely played together on the court and didn't advance further than the second round of the playoffs.
What's more, they are all on different teams at this stage, underscoring Brooklyn's overall failure with the ambitious roster-building decisions.
As if that wasn't difficult enough during Marks' tenure, the Nets' future draft capital is not exactly enticing. They are sending first- and second-round draft picks in 2024, 2025 and 2027 to other teams. Their 2026 first-round pick is also going to the Houston Rockets.
Brooklyn's immediate future isn't promising either, as it is 21-33 and 2.5 games back of the final spot in the Eastern Conference play-in tournament. Marks has not built a championship contender over the course of multiple head coaches, but it seems like he will still have the opportunity to make the next hire.
