Per Allison Koehler of USA Today, Heyward initially suffered a groin injury on the first day of Steelers training camp, which led to his lackluster 2023 campaign. The 34-year-old was limited to 14 snaps in Pittsburgh's season opener against the San Francisco 49ers after he tore his groin completely off the bone.
After undergoing surgery, Heyward was given a recovery time of 12 weeks. However, he was motivated to get back on the field and returned in half the time. Unfortunately, his accelerated recovery affected his production.
Heyward totaled just 33 tackles in 11 games. His two sacks were his fewest since he became a full-time starter in his third season in 2013. His run of six straight Pro Bowl selections came to an end after his injury-riddled campaign.
Following Pittsburgh's loss to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card Round, Heyward admitted that he was contemplating retirement. He quickly reversed course and said he would continue his impressive career.
Heyward has been one of the faces of the Steelers' defense since the team selected him 31st overall in the 2011 NFL draft. He was named Walter Payton Man of the Year for his charitable efforts off the field in his sixth straight season nominated for the award.
