Patriots Rumors: Mayo 'Expected to Have a Significantly Larger Staff' Than Belichick
It's a new era for the New England Patriots and first-year head coach Jerod Mayo is expected to fill as many coaching roles as possible.
Mike Reiss of ESPN reported that the team is expected to finalize its coaching staff this week and that "one of the headline themes is expected to be volume." This contrasts from how the team was run under former head coach Bill Belichick, as the Patriots "traditionally had one of the NFL's smaller staffs.
"Mayo is expected to have a significantly larger staff, which is somewhat tied to the desire to integrate ideas and perspectives from those who have coached elsewhere -- and is also perhaps a nod to how rare Belichick was in terms of having the knack to handle so many responsibilities himself," Reiss wrote.

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮
Belichick was the Patriots head coach for 24 seasons, compiling an overall record of 266-121 and leading the franchise to nine Super Bowl appearances and six championships. He also served in the general manager role for the entirety of his tenure and even had several seasons without official coordinators on the coaching staff.
His departure meant that the Patriots turned to Mayo as the next head coach, and he brings a significantly different resume to the table. He served as the team's inside linebackers coach from 2019-2023 but beyond that has no prior experience coaching.
Still. he was a captain for the Patriots during his NFL career and Patriots owner Robert Kraft believes that "coaching was always his destiny." This helped him get the job, and it looks like he is looking to get as much help as he can in order to steer the Patriots back in the right direction after a dismal 4-13 season in 2023.
