Drew McIntyre vs. Seth Rollins Set for WWE WrestleMania 40 After Elimination Chamber
Drew McIntyre defeated Randy Orton, Logan Paul, Kevin Owens, LA Knight and Bobby Lashley in an Elimination Chamber match at the same-titled premium live event in Perth, Australia, on Saturday to earn the chance to face Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40 in April.
At least three WrestleMania matches were set up throughout this bout, highlighted by the McIntyre-Rollins title contest. The Scottish Warrior got the win by pinning Orton after Paul hit The Viper with a pair of brass knuckles.
Orton eliminated Paul earlier in the match with an RKO as the social media star prepared to use the brass knuckles on his opponents.
The other potential 'Mania bout set up involves LA Knight and AJ Styles.
The Phenomenal One sneaked into the Chamber and unleashed a vicious attack on Knight with chair shots before hitting him with the Styles Clash on the chair.
McIntyre crawled over to pin The Megastar following the interference.
In the weeks leading up to Elimination Chamber, Raw general manager Adam Pearce and SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis announced that 12 Superstars would have the opportunity to qualify for the men's Elimination Chamber match.
Six qualifying bouts were held on Raw and SmackDown over the course of a couple of weeks, and it resulted in a stacked field.
Orton defeated Sami Zayn, Knight beat Ivar, Lashley took down Bronson Reed, McIntyre defeated Styles, Owens beat Dominik Mysterio and Paul got past The Miz.
Rollins has been world heavyweight champion since winning a tournament to determine the inaugural champ in May, but he has been out of action since January.
During a successful title defense against Jinder Mahal on Raw, The Visionary suffered injuries to the MCL and meniscus in his knee, and while that initially called his WrestleMania status into question, he looks set to be ready for The Showcase of the Immortals.
Lately, Rollins has been plotting with Cody Rhodes on a way to end Roman Reigns' run as undisputed WWE universal champion, but now he'll have to fight battles on multiple fronts since his WrestleMania opponent has been determined.
Assuming Rollins does not wrestle until April 6-7, he will have a huge challenge on his hands in perhaps his first match back on The Grandest Stage of Them All against McIntyre.
The Scot was the odds-on favorite to win entering Elimination Chamber since he had been positioned as the top heel on Raw and Rollins' nemesis, and he got the job done in Australia.
McIntyre is a two-time WWE champion, but his title wins came without fans in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so he will finally have a chance at WrestleMania to reach the top of the mountain in WWE in front of a sold-out crowd.
