Basketball Hall of Famer Charles "Lefty" Driesell died on Saturday at the age of 92, his family announced (h/t ESPN.com).
Driesell spent 41 seasons coaching college basketball with four different programs from 1960 to 2003. He retired in the middle of the 2002-03 season while he was at Georgia State.
The Virginia native played college basketball at Duke from 1950 to '54.
Before moving into the college coaching ranks, Driesell began his coaching career at Granby High School in Virginia in 1954. He was there for two years before moving to Newport News High School from 1957 to '59.
Davidson hired Driesell as its head coach in 1960. He led the program to a 176-65 record and three NCAA tournament appearances in nine seasons before getting hired by Maryland in March 1969.
Driesell's longest stint at a program was his 17-season run with the Terrapins. They won two ACC regular-season titles and the 1983-84 conference tournament title.
After resigning as Maryland's head coach before the 1986-87 season, Drisell worked for the school as an assistant athletic director and television analyst. He moved back into coaching in 1988 with James Madison.
The Dukes won five straight regular-season CAA titles from 1989-90 to 1993-94. They won the conference tournament title '94 to make the NCAA tournament for the first time in 10 years.
Driesell finished his coaching career with a six-season run at Georgia State. The Panthers won a program-record 29 games and made the NCAA tournament in the 2000-01 season.
Overall, Driesell's 786 career wins are the 15th-most in Division I men's basketball history. He led each of the four programs he coached to the NCAA tournament, with Maryland and Davidson reaching the Elite Eight twice.
Driesell was named conference Coach of the Year a total of nine times during his career. He was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007 and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
