Shams: Warriors' Klay Thompson Expected to Draw Interest Lakers, Heat, More in FA
As free agency looms for Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson, several teams could be eyeing the veteran, according to The Athletic and Stadium's Shams Charania.
In an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Charania detailed a handful of teams that could be looking to add Thompson.
"He's set to be a free agent at the end of the season. I expect him to test the marketplace," Charania said. "I would expect both Florida teams, I would expect both LA teams, I would expect potentially a couple East Coast teams to have interest in Klay Thompson."
Thompson has spent his entire career with the Warriors, but as the 34-year-old looks for a second act in the late stages of his career, he could be eyeing a change of scenery.
Thompson is putting up 17.3 points per game this season, which is his lowest mark since his second year in the NBA. On Thursday, he came off the bench for the first time since his rookie year, putting up 35 points in a win over the Utah Jazz.
According to Charania, it will take a lot for Golden State to keep Thompson around. While he has been a part of the core that won the Warriors' four championships, his price tag might not be one that the team is willing to pay.
"As of right now, unless there's a miracle extension, he's going to test the marketplace," Charania said. "And I think the Warriors have understood going into the year, after they didn't extend him, his future is up in the air just for the simple fact that he's going to be going into free agency."
Thompson is in the final season of a five-year, $189.9 million contract, and the Warriors likely won't be willing to pay that much for a player who is arguably past his prime.
Once a main option for the Warriors in the clutch, Thompson has been benched in favor of rookie guard Brandin Podziemski several times in late-game situations this year.
Thursday's win over the Jazz was a different story as Thompson remained in the game late, and big performances like he had then will need to become common for Thompson to continue getting the nod from head coach Steve Kerr.
If he decides to hit the road this offseason, he could have his options available.
