Kevin Durant Rumors: NBA Exec Predicts Star Could Eye Trade If Suns Have Early Exit

Timothy RappFeb 14, 2024

Kevin Durant is under contract for two more seasons after this year but there reportedly is some belief around the NBA that if the Phoenix Suns don't go on a deep playoff run, the 35-year-old superstar could consider yet another change in scenery.

"[Durant] for sure looks around," a Eastern Conference told Howard Beck of The Ringer. "Durant always has a wandering eye."

The Suns are currently 32-22 but sit just fifth in the Western Conference despite having arguably the league's most high-profile trio in Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.

Granted, those three have only appeared in 22 games together and have been mostly excellent when paired, posting a 12.7 net rating while on the court together, per NBA.com. The team is 14-8 in those contests.

Another major issue earlier in the year was that the Suns essentially nuked their depth chart to acquire Durant and Beal, though landing Royce O'Neale and David Roddy at the trade deadline improved the quality of their role players. The team then added Thaddeus Young in the buyout market and has one more roster spot remaining to sign a quality veteran.

All of this to say, a healthy Suns team with more quality depth than it had to start the season could hit this year's playoffs in far better form than we've seen from it thus far. And that's a dangerous proposition for the rest of the NBA given the firepower the team has in Durant, Booker and Beal.

If Durant does get a wandering eye, however, more than a few teams would likely come calling. Few players put the ball into the basket more effectively.

But would Durant really only give the Suns parts of two seasons to figure things out before departing? It would be a quick trigger, even for him. Chances are, the team's willingness to reshape the roster in an all-out effort to pursue championships has bought them some goodwill.

But you never know. It certainly would make this upcoming summer all the more intriguing.
