NBA Exec: Heat 'a Potential Candidate for a Shake-Up' Given Jimmy Butler's Age
The Miami Heat could reportedly "shake up" their roster this offseason as Jimmy Butler approaches age 35.
Howard Beck of The Ringer spoke to an NBA executive who felt the Heat could be in line for a big move.
Butler has missed at least 18 games in each of the three previous seasons and will reach that number for a fourth straight year on Wednesday night against the Philadelphia 76ers. He has been out of the lineup of late for personal reasons.
The Heat have not been shy about their desire to acquire a co-star for Butler. They were considered the favorite to land Damian Lillard for much of last summer before the Milwaukee Bucks swooped in at the last minute to acquire the All-Star guard.
Butler has been able to hoist the Heat on his back to the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023, and they were conference finalists in 2022. That said, he's advancing in age and has been noticeably exhausted at times during the Heat's playoff run—to the point of it even becoming a meme.
Miami added Terry Rozier at the deadline this offseason and could use his contract this summer as part of a blockbuster deal for a star. Rozier will make $24.9 million in 2024-25, and Duncan Robinson's five-year, $90 million deal makes him tradeable as well.
The Heat struggled in making Tyler Herro the centerpiece of trade talks last summer, and that's likely to continue with the fifth-year guard plateauing in his development.
