NBA L2M: Knicks' Jalen Brunson Didn't Foul Aaron Holiday on Late Shot in Rockets' Win
The NBA has admitted that an error was made at the end of Monday's game between the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets.
Per SNY's Ian Begley, the NBA said in its Last Two Minute report that Knicks guard Jalen Brunson legally contested the late three-point attempt by Rockets guard Aaron Holiday that was called for a foul and resulted in a controversial 105-103 loss for New York.
The call ruined what was a very entertaining game that could have been a classic. Brunson scored four straight points to tie the game at 103 with 8.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but he was called for a foul on Holiday with 0.1 remaining. Holiday made the first two free throws and intentionally missed the second.
In addition to the NBA admitting a mistake was made, the game's crew chief Ed Malloy said afterward that the call was an error, noting that the contact by Brunson was incidental.
"After seeing it during postgame review, the offensive player was able to return to a normal playing position on the floor," Malloy said. "The contact which occurred after the release of the ball therefore is incidental and marginal to the shot attempt and should not have been called."
For his part, Brunson refused to criticize the officials for their mistake. When reporters asked him three different questions about the call, he responded each time by saying, "Great call. Next question."
The loss was the third straight for the Knicks, dropping their record to 33-21. New York has been dealing with injuries to key players, including star forward Julius Randle (shoulder) and swingman OG Anunoby (elbow).
The Knicks will try to get back on track when they visit the Orlando Magic on Wednesday for their final game before the All-Star break.
