Mitchell Trubisky Released from Steelers Contract Ahead of 2024 NFL Free Agency

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially announced that quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was released on Monday.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo noted that Trubisky had two years left on his contract, with $5.25 million due in the upcoming season. However, there was no guaranteed money left on his deal and he had a $1 million roster bonus that was due March 15.

Trubisky appeared in five games for the Steelers during the 2023 season, making two starts.

He completed 62.6 percent of his passes, throwing for 632 yards and four touchdowns to go along with five interceptions. The Steelers lost both of his starts, failing to score 20 points in each game.

The writing appeared to be on the wall regarding Trubisky's murky future with the organization, as team owner and president Art Rooney II was noncommittal when asked about the signal-caller.

"Mitch, we'll just have to see where we go with Mitch and the other spots that might be available," he said in an interview on Steelers.com (4:10 mark).

Instead, Pittsburgh will focus on building a more competitive quarterback room around starter Kenny Pickett in free agency. Head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed the team's intentions when speaking to reporters on Jan. 18.

"There's always competition in this thing," Tomlin explained, per Nick Shook of NFL.com. "We don't anoint anyone. I'm appreciative of [Pickett's] efforts and where he is and excited about continuing to work with him, but certainly he will be challenged from a competition perspective moving forward."

Now, Trubisky will look for a new destination for the 2024 season. The former No. 2 overall pick was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2018 after recording a career-high 24 touchdown passes while achieving a record of 11-3 as a starter, although he's failed to reach those heights ever since.
