Christian McCaffrey: 49ers 'Beat Ourselves' in NFL Super Bowl 58 Loss to Chiefs
The San Francisco 49ers beat themselves in Sunday's Super Bowl 58 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, at least according to star running back Christian McCaffrey.
"I thought he did great," McCaffrey told reporters while addressing the play of quarterback Brock Purdy following San Francisco's 25-22 overtime loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 58 at Allegiant Stadium. "I think you go look at the self-inflicted wounds we had and we just beat ourselves."
The 49ers had every opportunity to put the Chiefs away after entering halftime with a 10-3 lead.

However, San Francisco opened the second half with three straight punts and allowed Kansas City to hang around for far too long. The Chiefs eventually tied the game at 19 late in the fourth quarter to force overtime, where the Niners struggled in the red zone.
The 49ers won the coin toss and took the first offensive possession of overtime with hopes of scoring a touchdown. However, the team had to settle for a field goal by Jake Moody, allowing Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to put together yet another iconic game-winning drive.
Mahomes found Mecole Hardman in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown, crushing San Francisco's title hopes in the span of a few minutes.
The Chiefs became the first team since the New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005 to win back-to-back Super Bowl titles. The 49ers, meanwhile, are still looking for their first championship since 1995.
Kansas City is hoping to three-peat next season, though McCaffrey and the 49ers figure to remain a top contender for the title. San Francisco already owns the best odds to win the Super Bowl next season at +550 despite Sunday's loss, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
And while the loss was heartbreaking for the 49ers and their fans, the pain of losing the championship should only motivate the franchise to come back stronger next year.
