Patrick Mahomes Earns GOAT Praise from NFL Fans as Chiefs Beat 49ers in Super Bowl 58
Patrick Mahomes is inevitable.
The future Hall of Famer added to his legendary status by leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. He won the game with a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman Jr. on a do-or-die drive after the 49ers converted a field goal on the first possession of the extra period.
Kansas City has won back-to-back titles and three of the last five Super Bowls to become the NFL's modern-day dynasty. Mahomes is just 28 years old and already cemented his place in greatest-of-all-time discussions alongside Tom Brady and Joe Montana.
As for San Francisco, it also lost to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV four years ago and will surely regret several missed opportunities to put the game away when it was the better team in the early going.
But Sunday was all about Mahomes lifting another Lombardi Trophy in a season when there were questions about the offense's overall effectiveness and lack of weapons, and social media reacted accordingly:
While Mahomes was eventually the story, the defenses set the tone out of the gate.
The game was scoreless through the first quarter, and both Christian McCaffrey and Isiah Pacheco lost fumbles when their teams were in scoring position. It took shocking developments to break the 0-0 slog in the second quarter with Jake Moody drilling a Super Bowl record 55-yard field goal and wide receiver Jauan Jennings, of all players, throwing a touchdown pass.
McCaffrey caught the touchdown on the trick play, and the Chiefs were only able to generate a field goal in response before halftime.
Yet the 49ers let Mahomes stay within striking distance even during a stretch when Ji'Ayir Brown picked him off on the opening possession of the second half, Mitch Wishnowsky pinned the Chiefs back at their own 1-yard line with a punt and San Francisco's offense had multiple possessions with a chance to extend its advantage.
Those missed chances were particularly costly when a Kansas City punt hit Darrell Luter Jr. on the foot and Ray-Ray McCloud was unable to pick it up to gain possession. It took one play for Mahomes to hit Marquez Valdes-Scantling for the go-ahead touchdown and completely flip the momentum heading into the fourth quarter.
That is, until Jennings made another monster play and caught the go-ahead touchdown. He joined former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles as the only players in Super Bowl history to both catch and throw a touchdown.
While Moody's ensuing extra point was blocked, he made up for it with a massive 53-yard field goal to break a tie after Harrison Butker hit a field goal on the other end. Yet Mahomes would not be denied and hit Travis Kelce for a critical conversion to set up another Butker field goal to force overtime.
Moody delivered yet again with a field goal on the opening possession of overtime, but Mahomes delivered with his magic yet again.
Now he will go for a three-peat next year, and who can bet against him at this point?
