After directing the drive that led to the game-tying field goal late in the fourth quarter, Mahomes cemented his status as one of the most clutch quarterbacks in NFL history in overtime.
On 4th-and-1 with the Super Bowl hanging in the balance at the Chiefs' 34-yard line, Mahomes took the ball himself to keep Kansas City's championship hopes alive.
After several more short passes, Mahomes took the ball into his own hands again as he scrambled up the middle for 19 yards to get the ball to the San Francisco 13-yard line.
With three seconds left on the clock, Mahomes threw to Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr. for the Super Bowl-winning three-yard touchdown.
Mahomes finished the game with 333 passing yards for two touchdowns and an interception. He connected on 34 of 46 passes and averaged 7.2 yards per attempt.
The quarterback also led all Chiefs players with 66 rushing yards on nine carries.
He joins Tom Brady and Joe Montana as the only quarterbacks to be named Super Bowl MVP three times.
The victory didn't just give Mahomes a trio of Super Bowl MVP titles. It also gave the Chiefs their third championship in five years, officially establishing the team as an NFL dynasty.
In 2024, Mahomes and the Chiefs will begin thinking about chasing records set by Brady's New England Patriots. For now, the team will concentrate on celebrating its LVIII victory.
