Heat's Haywood Highsmith Cited for Car Crash Leaving Man with Partially Amputated Leg
Miami Heat forward Haywood Highsmith was cited with "careless and negligent" driving by the Miami-Dade Police Department after his alleged role in a car accident that left a man with a partially amputated right leg, per ESPN.
It was not a criminal citation, and Highsmith was not injured.
The injured man was reportedly helping a woman with her disabled car—which had its lights out—when Highsmith approached in his vehicle, driving at 45 mph, 5 mph over the speed limit. He wasn't able to stop his car in time before hitting both the vehicle and the man who was behind it.
The injured man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he was also diagnosed with a broken left leg and a broken left arm.
There were no fatalities in the accident.
Highsmith's agent released a statement, per Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic:
"We have been made aware that Highsmith was involved in a car accident heading home from last night's game," the Heat said in a statement. "Highsmith is listed as out for tonight's contest against the San Antonio Spurs due to personal reasons. Our hearts go out to those who were injured. We will have no further comment at this time."
The 27-year-old has appeared in 37 games for the Heat this season (24 starts), averaging 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. It's his third year with the franchise.
