Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga Was 'Virtually' Untouchable at NBA Trade Deadline, per GM
Following an eventful NBA trade deadline, Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said forward Jonathan Kuminga was "virtually" untouchable, per The Athletic's Anthony Slater.
"As untouchable as guys can be in this league," Dunleavy said. "Didn't see a scenario where Jonathan wouldn't be on our team after this deadline."
Kuminga, 21, is averaging 15.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season. After an inconsistent start to the year, Kuminga has been putting up 21.7 points per game since the start of the new year and has also improved his rebounding numbers.
The Warriors are looking to continue getting strong play from Kuminga as they fight for a playoff spot. Golden State currently sits in 11th place in the Western Conference at 23-25.
Kuminga was reportedly involved in trade talks between the Warriors and the Chicago Bulls along with Bulls' guard Alex Caruso, but those talks ceased as neither team wanted to give up their respective pieces.
Just a month ago, it seemed Kuminga's time with Golden State was limited. After a loss in early January that saw Kuminga sit the final 18 minutes of the game, The Athletic's Shams Charania and Slater reported that Kuminga had "lost faith" in head coach Steve Kerr.
Now, Kuminga has emerged as one of the Warriors' most valuable options. He played just 21.9 minutes per game before the new year, but now has seen his minutes increase to 31.9 per game in January and February.
A young piece on a Warriors team looking to stay in the mix, Golden State's decision to keep Kuminga around could pay off in the long haul.
