NBA Rumors: Royce O'Neale, David Roddy to Suns in 3-Team Trade with Grizzlies, Nets
The Phoenix Suns are acquiring veteran forward Royce O'Neale in a three-way trade with the Brooklyn Nets and Memphis Grizzlies, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
The full deal will include the Suns getting O'Neale from the Nets and David Roddy from the Grizzlies, the Nets receiving three second-round picks and "salaries" from the Suns and the Grizzlies receiving a pick swap and Yuta Watanabe from Phoenix, per Shams.
Those "salaries" are Chimezie Metu, Jordan Goodwin and Keita Bates-Diop, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix.
For the Suns, it's a consolidation of role players, leaving them with a clear upgrade in O'Neale, a solid option in Roddy and the chance to potentially add a pair of players on the buyout market with the roster spots they created.
The 30-year-old O'Neale is the archetypal three-and-D wing that NBA teams covet in supporting roles. In 49 games this season (six starts) he's averaging 7.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, shooting 36.6 percent from three. For his career, he's hit on 38.1 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
Roddy, 22, has put up 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 48 appearances this season (13 starts).
The Suns will likely stick with a starting five of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, Jusuf Nurkić and Grayson Allen, but O'Neale and Roddy should provide a major upgrade to the bench alongside current sixth man Eric Gordon.
The combination of Metu, Goodwin, Bates-Diop and Watanabe, meanwhile, had combined to chip in 18.1 points per game off the bench. O'Neale and Roddy have combined for 15.8 points per game on their own, and the Suns will be an extremely attractive option for the top players to hit the buyout market.
The 30-21 Suns have gotten markedly better after making this trade, in other words.
The goal in Phoenix is simple—it's championship or bust. Durant, Booker and Beal will be the main determinants in whether they reach that goal, but this team was extraordinarily top-heavy to start the season.
Now, they have a bit more quality depth, and the buyout market has the potential to really solidify this roster. If the Suns can stay healthy, they're a major threat to win a title.
