49ers' Trent Williams: Super Bowl Win Would Be a 'Fairy Tale' After Cancer Surgery

Adam WellsFeb 8, 2024

San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams is one win away from chasing the only accolade that has eluded him throughout his storied career.

Speaking to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, Williams said a victory in the Super Bowl would be "like one of those fairy tales" to cap off a comeback story that involved a cancer scare in 2019.

Williams revealed in October 2019, when he played for Washington, he was diagnosed with Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans, a rare soft tissue tumor that develops deep in the skin and was "within weeks of metastasizing through to my brain to my skull."

The situation required Williams to undergo surgery to remove the cancerous growth. Williams said he first noticed the growth back in 2013 and told Washington's team doctors about it multiple times over the years, but each time they said it was nothing to worry about.

There was a dispute between Williams and the team about how the situation was handled. He expressed unhappiness with then-Washington president Bruce Allen and the medical staff for not taking the situation seriously.

The team requested an official review of Williams' medical records and care.

Williams told reporters in October 2019 he had "no trust" with Washington. He didn't play during the 2019 season after initially being placed on the reserve list during training camp and the non-football injury list when he failed a physical after experiencing discomfort with his helmet stemming from the surgery.

Washington traded Williams to the San Francisco 49ers in April 2020. Now in his 14th season, he is playing in the Super Bowl for the first time. He has already stated his intention to return to the Niners in 2024.

The 35-year-old has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of the past 11 seasons he has played and the All-Pro first team in each of the past three seasons.
