Celtics Rumors: Kelly Olynyk, Kris Dunn Among 2024 NBA Trade Deadline Targets

Doric SamFeb 7, 2024

The Boston Celtics are hoping to improve their depth prior to Thursday's NBA trade deadline, and they are reportedly eyeing a few players from the Utah Jazz.

According to Brian Robb of Mass Live, the Celtics have "inquired about the availability" of Jazz forward Kelly Olynyk, and they have also "kicked the tires on" point guard Kris Dunn and forward Simone Fontecchio.

Olynyk spent the first four seasons of his 11-year career in Boston, so acquiring him would be a reunion for the Celtics. Negotiating with the Jazz ahead of Thursday's deadline makes sense, as former Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has served as Utah's CEO of basketball operations for the past two seasons.

Robb went on to explain that acquiring Olynyk wouldn't be a simple deal for Boston, as he has a $12 million salary this season and also has a large number of suitors around the league.

"Boston would need to include at least four bench players to make the salary matching work and that's a lot of moving pieces that Utah ultimately may struggle to find room for," Robb stated. "The Jazz would need to create roster room for said players in a deal, at least initially, via waiving or trading other players."

Dunn, a former lottery pick who's playing on an expiring contract for the veteran's minimum, would be a much cheaper option for Boston. The same goes for Fontecchio, who is making just $3 million this season. Both Dunn and Fontecchio are reliable three-point shooters, but Dunn would also significantly improve the Celtics' wing defense.

Robb noted that Boston has three available future first-round picks to deal (2024, 2026, 2031) and up to eight future second-round picks that are movable before Thursday's deadline, so it remains to be seen if the team will be able to land a player or two that would shore up the holes on its roster.
