WWE's Seth Rollins on The Rock amid WrestleMania Rumors: 'We Don't Need Ya, Big Guy'
WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins is among the many who believe WrestleMania 40 would be just fine if Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson wasn't on the card facing Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
"He can come in, he can get what he wants, he can take his little piece and then he can go back to Hollywood and do his thing because we got this thing," Rollins said during an appearance on Good Morning Football on Wednesday. "We don't need ya. We'd love to have ya, but we don't need ya, big guy."
The Rock caused a major stir in the wrestling world when he appeared on Friday's episode of SmackDown Live and seemed to usurp Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes for the main-event spot against Reigns at WrestleMania 40.
Fans on social media immediately and almost universally panned the segment. While many have been clamoring for The Rock and Reigns to face each other for years, scheduling the match without a proper buildup and sacrificing Rhodes to do so ignited an overwhelmingly negative reaction.
It should be noted that WrestleMania 40 has taken multiple hits that significantly diminished the luster of the marquee event. CM Punk, who was expected to challenge Rollins for his title, suffered a torn triceps that will keep him sidelined until at least the summer.
There had been rumors that Brock Lesnar was expected to return for a match at WrestleMania 40, but Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp reported that he has been removed from WWE's creative plans for the foreseeable future after he was named in the sex-trafficking lawsuit filed against former WWE chairman Vince McMahon, former executive John Laurinaitis and the company.
WWE turned to The Rock in hopes that his return would generate excitement for WrestleMania 40. However, Rollins' comments make it apparent that fans are not alone in their distaste for the way things have played out.
