Teofimo Lopez Jr. vs. Jamaine Ortiz: Fight Odds, Live Stream, Predictions

Alex BallentineFeb 8, 2024

It's The Takeover vs. The Technician when Teofimo Lopez Jr. and Jamaine Ortiz meet in the ring on Thursday night for a special weeknight offering at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

Lopez's WBO junior welterweight title will be on the line as he makes his first title defense after taking the strap from Josh Taylor with a unanimous-decision win in June 2023.

Ortiz, 27, will be fighting for a world championship for the first time. With only one loss (to Vasiliy Lomachenko) on his record, he's looking to prove he belongs among the elite of the 140-pound division.

Which Version of Teofimo Lopez Jr. Will Show Up?

Lopez has undeniable talent. When he's at the top of his game he's proved himself as a world champion. His wins over Lomachenko and Taylor show what kind of fighter he can be when things are going his way.

However, there are some puzzling performances on that resume too. His loss to George Kambosos Jr. can be chalked up to a slow start and a rally that was too little too late. He was also knocked down early in his split-decision win over Sandor Martin.

As a favorite, Lopez is on shaky ground if he gets off to a slow start.

Lopez Jr.'s father and trainer believes that the version of his son that lost to Kambosos and had some questionable performances is gone and we will see the same fighter who took out Taylor last time he was in the ring.

"Let's see what happens. Gordo (Lopez Jr.) looks sharp. He looks fast. We did our last prep and we only have a few pounds to cut. He looks very motivated, and when he is plugged in and ready, he is unbeatable. He needed the last six months off last year. He needed to recharge and he is fighting Super Bowl week before the world. He is loving his life right now and everything is good," he told Ring TV.

When Lopez is on his game, he's a dangerous, exciting fighter. He gets the opportunity to show that he's really turned the page and will be a consistent champion.

Can Ortiz Frustrate Lopez?

Ortiz is obviously looking to play the role of spoiler. He lives up to his Technician moniker with a tight game that's built around his jab and speed. Ortiz is not the kind of fighter who's going to throw away this opportunity with a brawling approach.

But is that enough to make him a legitimate threat to the title?

Abraham Nova is uniquely qualified to weigh in on that question. He has worked as a sparring partner for both Lopez and Ortiz. Most recently, he worked with Ortiz in preparation for this fight, and he recently threw his support behind Ortiz, noting that the fight is a toss-up in his eyes.

"Whoever fights their fight the best wins that night. For me, it's really a 50-50 fight. You know, I respect both fighters," he told Keith Idec of Boxing Scene. "I wanna root for Lopez and I wanna root for Jamaine, but if I put my emotions to the side I don't know who to pick because I've been in the ring with both of them. So, it's a 50-50 fight. I can't give a winner."

Some of that might be him simply gassing up the man he most recently worked with, but Ortiz certainly has some tools to make things interesting.

Prediction

Ortiz might have the tools to make things interesting. He might have the tools to get the fight to the distance, but it's hard to imagine that he has the tools to actually win.

From all of the pre-fight interviews and buzz building around the event, Lopez seems like a focused fighter who really turned a corner with his win over Taylor. It's important to keep in mind that Taylor was previously unbeaten and still holds several light welterweight titles.

Lopez's dynamic style, athleticism and power will be the difference in this fight. Ortiz is a good boxer who isn't going to make it easy for Lopez, but as the bout wears on, The Takeover will, well, take over.

Expect the skills gap to become more apparent as this fight goes into the later rounds and Lopez turns up the heat.

Prediction: Lopez via unanimous decision
