Chris Paul Rumors: Warriors PG Unlikely to Be Traded Ahead of 2024 NBA Deadline
If the Golden State Warriors are going to rebuild the roster around Stephen Curry ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, don't expect Chris Paul to be one of the pieces going in the opposite direction.
According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, CP3 "also bills as unlikely to be traded, sources said."
As for who the Warriors might trade if they make a deal, young star-in-the-making Jonathan Kuminga is "not available for trade," per Fischer, while Andrew Wiggins has "generated the most significant trade chatter around the league."
Another possible option would be Kevon Looney, who has a very tradable $7.5 million salary this season and has been moved to the bench in recent games in favor of a smaller lineup that includes Draymond Green, Kuminga and Wiggins in the frontcourt.
Wiggins, 28, makes sense as a trade target. He's younger than Paul, teams covet wings and his $24.3 million salary gives the Warriors flexibility to bring back a potential star without being prohibitive to his potential acquiring team.
Paul, meanwhile, is 38 and his $30.8 million salary is hardly a great value at this point. It is an expiring deal, which might be appealing for teams looking to shed payroll ahead of free agency next season, but he's arguably less expendable for the Warriors than Wiggins.
Whereas the team can offer Kuminga a bigger role if Wiggins departs, it would be trickier to replace Paul's role leading the second team while Curry sits. In 32 games this year, Paul has averaged 8.9 points, 7.2 assists and 1.1 steals in 27.6 minutes per contest and the Dubs outscore opponents by four points per 100 possessions while he's on the court, per NBA.com.
Granted, keeping him healthy at his age is no guarantee down the stretch for a 22-25 Warriors team that needs to find a groove, and fast.
But it appears that Paul still has a role to play for this team, and if a roster shakeup does occur, he isn't necessarily a player the Warriors are looking to dump.
