MLB Rumors: José Altuve, Astros Agree to 5-Year, $125M Contract Extension

The Houston Astros already answered one of the biggest questions they were facing next offseason.

Star second baseman José Altuve has agreed to a five-year, $125 million extension, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. He had been entering the final year of his contract with Houston.

The team said "Altuve will be an Astro for life."

The 33-year-old is coming off another productive season, though one in which he was limited to 90 games thanks in large part to a thumb fracture he suffered during the World Baseball Classic. When healthy, he had 17 home runs and a .311/.393/.522 slash line.

Among second basemen with at least 400 plate appearances, Altuve was second in wOBA (.393) and wRC+ (154), per FanGraphs.

His impending free agency raised obvious questions over his long-term future in Houston.

The Astros have been one of the most consistent performers in MLB since winning the 2017 World Series, but that success hasn't been built on maintaining a high payroll. Per Cot's Baseball Contracts, their payroll has ranked in the top five on Opening Day just twice since then.

Ownership and the front office haven't been afraid to watch key players leave, either. Gerrit Cole, George Springer, Carlos Correa and Justin Verlander have all walked as free agents, with Verlander subsequently returning in a trade.

Tuesday's announcement perhaps speaks to the shift that has taken place after James Click's ouster as general manager and Dana Brown's arrival as his replacement.

Brown represented a marked contrast from how Houston's front office previously operated. The Josh Hader signing is an example of how that has translated in terms of personnel. The five-year, $95 million contract offered to the five-time All-Star is the kind of thing a past regime may not have pulled off.

José Abreu's three-year, $58.5 million deal and the $34 million over three years handed to Rafael Montero probably fall into that category as well. Both predated Brown's arrival but came after Click was shown the door after the 2022 season.

If the Astros were willing to be this aggressive in retaining Altuve, fans are bound to feel optimistic about Alex Bregman, another free-agent-to-be in 2025.

Because he's four years younger than Altuve—thus presumably wanting a longer contract—retaining Bregman might be trickier, especially before he has the chance to test the open market.
