Chiefs' Kadarius Toney Practicing Before Super Bowl; Jerick McKinnon Unlikely to Play

Doric SamFeb 6, 2024

As the Kansas City Chiefs are preparing to face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, they received some injury news both positive and negative.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that wide receiver Kadarius Toney will practice this week but his status for the Super Bowl is still undetermined. He added that running back Jerick McKinnon is not practicing and there's only a "slim" chance of him playing. Veteran left guard Joe Thuney is also considered "a long shot."

McKinnon has been on injured reserve with a groin injury since Dec. 23. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday that the Chiefs opened his practice window, but it sounds like he still won't be able to return for the Big Game.

Toney hasn't played since Kansas City's Week 15 win over the New England Patriots on Dec. 17. He had been listed on Chiefs injury reports with hip and ankle injuries, but some controversy arose over his playing status.

Toney had an Instagram Live post that went viral on the Sunday of the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens in which he was heard saying, "I'm not hurt. None of that." His comments were interpreted as a declaration that he wasn't injured, which prompted Reid to say on Jan. 29 that the injuries the team listed him having were "not made up by any means."

Toney addressed the situation while speaking to reporters at Super Bowl Opening Night on Monday, clarifying that his comments were never meant to be anything negative toward his team.

"I never attacked the Chiefs, never said anything about the Chiefs. Who I was referring to was the Giants fans and the people in my comments, my comment box, not even on my live recording, so you wouldn't even know they were there," he said. "But I was referring to them, which I shouldn't have. I just wanted to go out there. I just wanted to get my message across as far as my injury, but I shouldn't have did that at the end of the day."

Toney played a big role in helping the Chiefs defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, catching a touchdown and returning a punt 65 yards to set up another in the fourth quarter. Kansas City is certainly hopeful to have him back on the field on Sunday against San Francisco.
