Patrick Mahomes on Andy Reid Retirement Buzz: 'All About Football and Cheeseburgers'

Tyler ConwayFeb 6, 2024

We've already seen coaching legends Bill Belichick, Nick Saban and Pete Carroll leave their respective posts over the last month, but Patrick Mahomes does not expect Andy Reid to become the latest Hall of Famer to walk away from the game.

Mahomes said Reid doesn't have many outside hobbies that would lure him into retirement.

"Other than spending time with his grandkids, he doesn't do any of that stuff," Mahomes told Adam Teicherof ESPN. "He's all about football and cheeseburgers."

Reid, 65, is younger than Belichick, Saban and Carroll, who are all in their early 70s. That said, Reid is in his 25th straight season serving as an NFL head coach. He's not that far off from the total coaching tenure of Carroll, who was a head coach for 27 years between the college and pros. Belichick had a 29-year head-coaching career, while Saban topped them all at an even 30 years.

Reid says he does have a non-football bucket list and spent time in Italy eating his way "from the north to the south" last summer. However, he typically works on football even during vacation and those closest to him see a coach full of energy.

"He's in a good place, not just with Pat but with his coaching staff and with the personnel staff," Kansas City general manager Brett Veach said. "This is the setup he's always wanted. I think he has a lot of football coaching ahead of him, and I can see him coaching for the foreseeable future here. I think he's got a good chunk of time left."

It's not hard to see why Reid would be happy looking into the future. He has a generational quarterback in Mahomes, who has led the Chiefs to four Super Bowls in the last five years. The Reid-Mahomes pairing arguably rejuvenated the coach, who had a reputation for falling short in the playoffs despite sterling regular seasons before Mahomes' arrival in Kansas City.

On Sunday, the Chiefs will seek to become the first repeat Super Bowl winner in nearly two decades. While we won't get ahead of ourselves, there has never been a Super Bowl repeat in NFL history. If Reid and Mahomes are able to capture their third ring this weekend, there's plenty of reasons for the coach to return and chase history.
