NFL Rumors: Execs Theorize Lions' Ben Johnson's HC Candidacy Was Sabotaged
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was one of the hottest head coaching candidates this offseason, though he surprisingly decided to stay put.
One of the theories that floated was that he wanted big-time money, and Mike Sando of The Athletic dug into those rumors on Monday:
"Regarding the bizarre reports Johnson wanted too much money, two theories emerged in conversations with execs and agents. One theory held that an executive from a team with a potential coaching vacancy was putting out the information to hurt Johnson's candidacy, because he hoped his own team would hire someone else. Another theory held that focusing on the pay component might distract from speculation that Johnson had not interviewed well."

Regardless, it seems likely the 37-year-old will emerge as a prime candidate again next offseason if the Lions continue to be an offensive juggernaut. Under his watch, they finished third in yards and fifth in points, the second straight year his offense has been top five in both categories.
Any number of reasons could have contributed to Johnson not taking a head coaching gig this offseason, including his own limited interest in the available vacancies. Whatever those reasons, the Lions are thankful.
