NBA Trade Rumors: 76ers' Tobias Harris Interests Pistons amid Joel Embiid Injury

Doric SamFeb 5, 2024

The Philadelphia 76ers are still reeling from losing star center Joel Embiid to a knee injury, but another veteran on the team is reportedly drawing trade interest ahead of Thursday's deadline.

According to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, the Detroit Pistons "remain interested" in acquiring power forward Tobias Harris, who played for the team from 2016 to 2018.

The 31-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Edwards added that the Pistons "are more likely to go after" the sharpshooting forward in free agency because the team "appears to be on the fence about giving up any type of asset for a player it could simply sign" over the offseason. It was also noted that Harris "has personal connections to Detroit and relationships with several in the front office and coaching staff," so he could have mutual interest in returning to the team.

Harris is Philadelphia's third-leading scorer at 17.9 points per game while also adding 6.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He's shooting 51.2 percent from the field, which ties his career high. However, the 34.4 percent he's shooting from three-point range is his lowest mark since he was traded to the Sixers during the 2018-19 season.

Philadelphia ranks fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 30-18 record, but the injury to Embiid could cause the team to rethink its strategy as the trade deadline approaches. Embiid is out indefinitely due to a meniscus injury, and a timetable for his return won't be determined until after he undergoes a procedure this week.

Harris is set to see a bigger role in the absence of Embiid, but the Sixers could look to recoup assets instead of risking the possibility of losing him for nothing over the summer.

The Sixers, who have lost five of their last six games, will be back in action on Tuesday against the Dallas Mavericks.
