Patriots Rumors: Former Giants HC Ben McAdoo in Talks to Join Jerod Mayo's Staff
The New England Patriots are reportedly "in talks" to bring in former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo in an "assistant head coach type of role," according to Albert Breer of The MMQB.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo continues to add seasoned coaches to his staff, as McAdoo spent two years as head coach of the Giants from 2016 through 2017. His most recent experience came with the Carolina Panthers, as he served as the team's offensive coordinator during the 2022 season.
Breer noted that he'll spend time assisting offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt if he's hired, as the two have a preexisting relationship. Both McAdoo and Van Pelt were members of the Green Bay Packers staff from 2013 through 2014. McAdoo was the team's quarterbacks coach, while Van Pelt was the Packers' running backs coach.

The former Giants head coach saw his tenure with the team end poorly, as he was fired in 2017 following a 2-10 start to the season. However, he's shown that he can be much more capable as an assistant.
During his time as New York's offensive coordinator in 2014, the Giants averaged the 10th-most yards per game. The following year, the team owned the No. 6 scoring offense in the NFL. He's also been able to get the most out of his quarterbacks as an assistant.
Eli Manning arguably had the best stretch of his career in McAdoo's time as offensive coordinator, completing 62.8 percent of his passes for 8,842 yards and 65 touchdowns against 28 interceptions from 2014 through 2015. This bodes well for a Patriots team that owns the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft and could select one of the several elite quarterback prospects in the class.
Although Carolina wasn't able to experience the same level of exceptional quarterback play under McAdoo in 2022, it's worth noting that three different signal-callers started at least five games for the team in the regular season.
Although his head coaching background leaves much to be desired, it's not hard to imagine McAdoo becoming a valuable member of Mayo's staff if hired.
