Lakers' LeBron James Hasn't Decided on Contract Option, Declines to Talk Cryptic Post
LeBron James may not be getting traded by the Feb. 8 deadline, but that doesn't mean he's fully committed to the Los Angeles Lakers beyond this season.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday ahead of the Lakers' game against the New York Knicks, James said "no" when asked if he knows what he's going to do about his player option for 2024-25.
James also declined to provide details about the meaning behind his cryptic hourglass emoji post on X, formerly known as Twitter, earlier this week.
In the wake of the hourglass emoji post, speculation about James' immediate future got so much attention his agent had to publicly state his client wasn't going to seek a trade.
"LeBron won't be traded, and we aren't asking to be," Rich Paul told ESPN's Brian Windhorst on Friday.
All of this has been happening as pressure continues to mount for the Lakers amid their ongoing struggles this season. They were able to take some of it off their shoulders on Thursday with an impressive 114-105 win over the Boston Celtics in which James and Anthony Davis didn't play.
Even with the victory, the Lakers are still just 25-25 and ninth in the Western Conference. There doesn't appear to be a quick fix to the problems with this roster. Their defense has slipped from 11th in rating last season to 14th this season.
The Lakers are tied for 14th in three-point percentage (36.9), but rank 28th in makes (11.3) and last in attempts (30.7) behind the arc.
James, whose option for next season is worth $51.4 million, has no reason to commit to another season with the Lakers right now. If his sole desire at this point in his career is chasing titles, there could be better situations available to him as a free agent this summer.
The 20-time All-Star has also been open about wanting to play with his son, Bronny James, though he has amended that stance.
Despite the Lakers' struggles to find consistency, James is still playing at a high level at this stage of his career. He's averaging 24.9 points on 52.0 percent shooting, 7.7 assists and 7.5 rebounds per game in 44 starts.
